Bomag BT 60e

BRIEF

The BT 60 E represented an important milestone in the evolution of the BOMAG product portfolio, marking the transition towards electrically powered construction equipment. While retaining large parts of the proven product architecture, the integration of an electric drive system, battery technology and electronic control units introduced new technical, functional and communicative requirements.

Beyond the development of the necessary housing components for the motor, electronics and cable management, the project addressed broader questions of product identity within an emerging generation of electric machines. The transition from combustion technology to electric propulsion required a reconsideration of color, graphics and product communication to establish a recognizable framework for future electrically powered products.

Design Process

BOMAG provided the 3D CAD model of the existing tamper, including all newly required components and installation volumes associated with the electric drive concept.

Product Analysis

Development concentrated on the top cover and motor enclosure as the key components shaping the appearance and technical integration of the machine. Material studies investigated both injection-molded and folded sheet-metal solutions, evaluating their suitability in terms of manufacturing, robustness and integration within the overall product architecture. Additional investigations explored the use of LED technology as a potential element of visual communication and product differentiation.

Ideation

The established design DNA provided the formal foundation for the design development. Its characteristic design principles, surface relationships and geometric features ensured coherence with the broader product family while supporting the consistent evolution of the BOMAG product language.

Variation

Following the initial review, sheet metal emerged as the preferred manufacturing solution. Three design concepts were developed to investigate different interpretations of technological progress, product identity and portfolio coherence. While one concept emphasised the transition to electric mobility through colour, another explored a more progressive formal expression. The third examined how the established BOMAG design DNA could be transferred to a new generation of electrically powered machines while maintaining recognisability and brand continuity.

Detailing

The selected design direction required the development of a supporting structure capable of translating the intended sheet-metal geometry into a robust and manufacturable solution. Several constructive approaches were explored to reconcile structural requirements, assembly principles and the overall design intent, providing a foundation for the subsequent engineering development.

Color Management

As the first electrically powered machine within the BOMAG FAYAT GROUP portfolio, the project required the development of a new color strategy. Building upon the established BOMAG color scheme, different shades of blue, color distributions and areas of application were explored to express electrification while maintaining brand recognizability.

Further adjustments have been made.

Realization

The sheet metal cladding has been edged on its upper and lower sides, creating a circumferential chamfer, which provides a more dynamic look and ensures more stability for the construction. The proportions of the BOMAG „swoosh“ have been optimized and now appear more elegant.

Final Design

Summary

The project benefited from a close collaboration between design and engineering. The continuous alignment of manufacturing requirements, structural constraints and design intent resulted in a coherent solution that successfully combines technical feasibility, product identity and long-term robustness.

Through the consistent application of chamfers, surface transitions and characteristic graphic features, the design language communicates robustness, technical precision and power while maintaining continuity with the established BOMAG design DNA.

“The design of the BT 60E successfully meets the different requirements placed on this project and combines a modern appereance that fits seamlessly into the family design of the BOMAG machines with high functionality at low cost.”
